Carole Wilkinson's day in Geelong

Carole Wilkinson In Geelong

GEELONG ADVERTISER ARTICLE

The following article appeared in the Geelong Advertiser following Carole Wilkinson's day in Gellong.

A terrified author signed posters for budding book reviewers at the Geelong Library. Addressing winners of the fourth annual Book Review Awards Geelong (BRAG's), Carole Wilkinson was wary of the student's talent.

`Reviewers are scary people, there the ones with all the scary power, I just read them with fear,' Ms Wilkinson said.

Cr Rod Macdonald commended winners Kayla Pool, Amy Beckley, David Inguanti, Lewis Pascoe and Eve Pownall and presented them with certificates and gifts at the award ceremony.

`This is a terrific thing to be involved in. Skills in this will inform you in the year's to come,' Cr Macdonald said.

More than 60 students from regional schools selected a book from the Notable Australian Children's Books 2008 list and wrote a short review for the competition, which encourages reading by reviewing.

Winner of the Older Reader category, Lewis Pascoe said he loved all the pictures and `beautiful prose' of Matt Ottley's Requiem for a Beast , the novel he choose to review.

The 15 year-old said constructing his response, which took 30 minutes, was easier than other forms of writing.

`It was a lot easier because the story is actually written, you don't have to think of the story yourself,' Mr Pascoe said.
